This glossary has been drafted by the Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) of the General Fisheries Council of the Mediterranean (GFCM).

In its first meeting held in Rome in 1999 the Scientific Advisory Committee decided to start the elaboration of a glossary. This glossary includes terms frequently used by the 4 GFCM Sub-Committees. The aim of the glossary was to put the different approaches available to the SAC and the Commission.

Each Sub-Committees prepared their own list of terms and defined an appropriate definition or used those in other glossaries existing.

The glossary is presented in table format. For each term the source Sub-Committee and the original reference are included.

Some terms are defined more than once, not only because of the interpretation of the various Sub-Committees but also by the same Sub-Committee using different sources.
